Whalton Manor
A beautiful historic holiday let and wedding venue
The Manor House Whalton Morpeth Northumberland NE61 3UT
The house was converted into its present form by Sir Edwin Lutyens who, with the assistance of Gertrude Jekyll, also designed the gardens. Before Lutyens’s conversion, the East Wing and stables were designed by Sir Robert Lorimer.
Architectural style
The house has seen many styles over the years, with the earliest part built in the mid-1600s, a Georgian wing and later work by the Victorian and Edwardian architects Sir Robert Lorimer and Sir Edwin Lutyens.
Lorimer, building in the late-Victorian period, used simple classical proportions on the exterior with intricate wooden panelling and plasterwork in the interior. Lutyens, who followed Lorimer in 1908 to finish off the building as you see it today, incorporated a number of styles and influences in his work. At Whalton Lutyens combined the distinct classicism we would see at New Delhi and the local Northumbrian vernacular with its medieval castles.
