Van Gogh House is part of a Georgian terrace in Brixton in which Vincent spent a formative year of his life. It is now a site for artist residencies and an annual commission. A collection of objects unearthed during its renovation tell the story of the house, its famous tenant and other residents. It is now open for pre-booked guided tours giving visitors the chance to follow in Van Gogh’s footsteps and learn the twists and turns of his time here.

In August 1873, Van Gogh took lodgings at 87 Hackford Road, aged just twenty. It was here that he fell in love for the first time and, though this love was unrequited, the year he spent here is said to be one of the happiest of his life. Visitors to the house will be able to see the original materials, traditional techniques and finest craftsmanship that have been used throughout the project, particularly in the ‘Van Gogh’ room, where Vincent lodged, plus a new extension and garden studio that have been added, readying the house for the next chapter as it becomes a place for artists’ residencies and more. Tours will include the opportunity to view items uncovered during the restoration project.

The Van Gogh House is much more than a monument to Van Gogh’s time in London; it is an ever-changing, evolving opportunity to support emerging artists to make a living from their work in their life time – something Van Gogh himself was never able achieve.

Guided tours offer visitors an opportunity to learn about our most famous tenant, as well as the architecture, history, and future of the house. We provide a unique insight into Van Gogh’s everyday existence in Victorian London, as well as a glimpse into the way ordinary people lived. Tours last about an hour and fifteen minutes and include a short walk to set our local context.
