Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery was the country retreat of Sir John Soane (1753-1837), one of Britain’s most influential architects. From 1800 to 1804, Soane designed and built it as his dream country home in then rural Ealing within a beautiful Regency landscape.
Soane saw Pitzhanger as the foundation for what he hoped would become a family dynasty of architects. Pitzhanger was designed around Soane’s eclectic and growing collection of art and antiquities. But first and foremost, it was a place of entertainment where he could host clients and influential friends at dinners and garden parties, or simply to fish in his lake. When Soane’s ideal of family harmony collapsed, he moved back to Lincoln’s Inn Fields, taking his collection with him.
Pitzhanger reopened in spring 2019 following a £12M three-year conservation project to return it to Soane’s original designs and now stands as a rare example of a spectacular Soane building. It celebrates Soane’s genius and influence as a designer, juxtaposing his intricate interior decorative schemes and architecture with a programme of ambitious contemporary art exhibitions, events and activities.
Pitzhanger still sits within its beautifully landscaped original parkland, which became Walpole Park in 1901. The shop sells bespoke gifts inspired by the Manor and the site also includes its café Soane’s Kitchen set within its original walled garden, with the Rickyard, Pitzhanger’s learning and activity space and its kiosk cafe Pitzhanger Pantry, nearby in Walpole Park.
