Newton Don
Newton Don House, Kelso, TD5 7SY
Newton Don House as we see it today was built in the early 1800’s but there had been a house on this site for over 400 years. The estate was originally owned by the Don family from 1645 but it was Alexander Don who commissioned Robert Smirke to design a newly designed house in the Neo Classical style. A well known architect from that time, Smirke is perhaps best known for his design of the British Museum in London and Eastnor Castle in in The Malvern Hills.
The Don family then sold the estate to the Balfour family in 1847, where they have remained until the present day.
