  • Sir Henry Pierrepont, whose monument can be seen in the church St Edmund’s which is adjacent to the house married Frances Cavendish daughter of Bess of Hardwick.
  • The Pierrepont family were involved in the Civil War, with two brothers taking opposing sides. Their mother lived at Holme Pierrepont and consequently the house was never attacked during the Civil War.
  • Other notable people were Evelyn 1st Duke of Kingston who was a member of the Kit Kat Club. His daughter Lady Mary Pierrepont was a famous writer and traveller and was better known by her married name Wortley Montague. She brought the small pox vaccine back to Britain.
  • Elizabeth Chudleigh Duchess of Kingston was the last peeress to be tried in Westminster Hall for bigamy. She was found guilty, and evaded prison by ending her days in Russia, becoming a friend of Catherine the Great. The Peacock Clock in the Hermitage once belonged to the Duchess.
