Fingask Castle
Ancestral home of the Threipland family for four hundred years.
Rait, Perthshire, PH2 7SA
Castle built in 12th c as one of a row along the Sidlaw hills overlooking the Tay estuary. The castle grew consistently over the centuries until hit by dry-rot in the 1920’s when the modern castle was built. Planning was refused to put back the main tower on the grounds that planning stopped when Historic Scotland started. However a number of public rooms of the old castle was preserved in the new comfortable 1920’s shell.
The Threiplands first came to Fingask as ‘serviteurs’ to the Bruce family in the 16th c, and bought the house , having married a Miss Bruce, in the 17th c. They were loyal to the Stuart kings, and lost their property twice in the 18th c, The grandfather of the present Threipland sold the house in the First World War. The brother of the present Threipland bhought the castle back in the 1960’s, and sold it to his younger brother n the 1090’s. So the Threiplands have bought the house 5 times! There is something rather magic about the place!
