Copped Hall
Shell of a grand Palladian house now in the hands of dedicated volunteers.
Crown Hill, Epping, Essex, CM16 5SH
A chance to see restoration in progress of an extraordinary Palladian mansion of 1753-8, burnt in 1917 and then asset stripped in 1950.
From 1986 to 1995 a prolonged campaign was fought to save the mansion and its Conservation Area from repeated large-scale development proposals. Architect Alan Cox, who was very involved in the campaign, raised the finance to enable the specially formed Copped Hall Trust to acquire the freehold of the hall and gardens in 1995. Alan leads the special tours to show how the hall and gardens are being brought back from extreme dereliction.
The tour, led by architect Alan Cox, covers most of the mansion, including the vaulted kitchen, cellars and grand stables. You’ll also visit the gardens, including a large sunken rock garden, a four-acre, eighteenth-century walled kitchen garden and a 450-foot-long herbaceous border.
Group visits only. To arrange a group visit for a minimum of 20 people, led by architect Alan Cox, please email pat.jacobs@historichouses.org or ring 01284 827087.
