Rich Family History
The Tempest family are believed to have come to England from Normandy during William the Conqueror’s 1066 invasion of England and were given land in the aftermath of the invasion.

32 Generations
The Tempests are one of England’s oldest Catholic landed gentry families. Roger Tempest, the current custodian of Broughton Sanctuary is the 32nd Tempest in a recorded line dating from the 11th century.

The Estate is a thriving example of how we can constantly transform and evolve by learning from the past and taking the best of what we have into the future. It is this philosophy that is behind our recent name change from Broughton Hall Estate to Broughton Sanctuary. We feel this better represents our vision and mission to be a regenerative space that is rooted in the Nature and Wellbeing of both humanity and the planet.

18th Century Gardens
Designed by Andrew Nesfield the historic formal gardens studded with statues, ponds, parterres and fountains offer a glimpse of 18th century fashion.

Present Day Transformation
Roger Tempest’s family have lived on Yorkshire’s Broughton Sanctuary land since 1097. This authentic lineage lends potent meaning to the geography, though the earth now holds a different imprint to any that has gone before. An evolutionary thinker and conscious entrepreneur, Roger and his partner and co-founder Paris Ackrill have created a new vision for what was once a struggling estate. Rooted in their shared values, a global outlook, and a desire to share and serve, Broughton Sanctuary today is a vibrant force for good in the world. Several components make up the whole: the magnificent 16th Century country house that is Broughton Hall, a 3,000-acre estate dedicated to nature recovery (where outdoor immersive activities include wild swimming, a woodland sauna, ice bathing, sweat lodges and woodland dining), a slick new wellbeing centre named ‘Avalon’, and a series of unique holiday homes ranging from an off-grid ‘Hermit Hut’ to cosy ‘Sanctuary Homes’.

Whether you come to Broughton Sanctuary to play or rest, write or decide, feast or fast, moon or forest bathe, a very dynamic 21st Century educational experience awaits. One with the potential to regenerate perspectives and lives
