Bindon Mill
Mill house on the River Frome which blends original features with an impressive art and sculpture collection.
Wareham, Dorset, BH20 6BN
A historic converted mill house on the River Frome that blends original features with contemporary living. Inside, a striking glass floor reveals the mill’s leat. Extensive collection of antique and modern furniture and fine art works.
The converted mill house tells a story dating back for many hundreds of years. Close to the Saxon town of Wareham, the property forms part of the Lulworth Estate and was restored in 2009 by its current owner. The interior has been sympathetically restored to incorporate many of its original features, blended with contemporary and modern living. In the mill room on the ground floor, the mill’s leat (water channel) runs beneath a glass floor, bringing the outside into the centre of the home. The house is on two levels with a lift connecting the floors. Throughout the house are many pieces of antique and modern furniture, including works by John Makepeace and Keith Cooper, who Makepeace was apprenticed to. Fine artworks, including paintings and modern bronzes, are showcased on all floors as well as in the garden, which acts as the perfect gallery.
Outside, the gardens are carefully and sensitively planted to provide colour in all seasons. Wildlife, including swans, ducks, kingfishers and an abundance of garden birds live peacefully alongside the impressive hydro-electric Archimedes screw, which produces the energy for the property from the power of the river. Impressive shrub garden, hosta beds and old carp ponds can be found close to the ruins of Bindon Abbey, a 12th century Cistercian monastery.
