Shaw House is one of the best preserved Elizabethan mansions in England, built by Thomas Dolman in 1581. Over the centuries Shaw House has welcomed royalty, seen action during the Civil War, housed soldiers during World War II and schooled generations of local children.
The House and grounds are open at weekends and school holidays from February to September. Within the House visitors can explore the rooms and learn more about the history of the House in the permanent exhibition on the first floor, along with the ‘Dressed for Shaw’ costume exhibition which runs throughout the House. We also have a year round programme of events and activities.

They are also open Monday to Friday during the school holidays (excluding Christmas holidays) from 10am – 4pm. Free children’s trails are available to collect from Reception.
Shaw House standard admission is free to all, including Historic Houses members.
Group visits may be made to the house and garden.

Shaw House can offer school visits during school term time and can be tailored to your needs. If you have a certain area you are covering in the curriculum your visit can be designed to incorporate certain topics and areas of history.
We can offer access to the Exhibition Room with the opportunity to have an activity in one of the adjoining rooms which could be lead by our Learning and Participation Officer and designed for your group. Depending on the occupancy of the House we could provide a tour of some of the rooms and grounds outside.
Each enquiry is dealt with on an individual basis as availability will need to be checked and topics discussed.

We will then be able to assess the availability of resources and confirm if there will be a cost involved.
