Chavenage is an Elizabethan building retaining many of its original features (dating from before 1576). As a result, there is unfortunately no wheelchair access, and there are steps and uneven floors throughout the house.
Health and Safety Advice.
In the gardens there are uneven surfaces, non-edible plants, low branches, and slippery surfaces in wet weather. In the building there are some steep stone steps, low doorways, uneven and slippery floors, and other steps not immediately obvious. Children should always be accompanied while visiting Chavenage.
Part of the tour requires visitors to go upstairs.
Chavenage House will adhere to both Governmental Guidelines and Public Health Guidance at the time of any visit.
Chavenage is a wonderful Elizabethan house of mellow grey Cotswold stone and tiles which contains much of interest for the discerning visitor.
The approach aspect of Chavenage is virtually as it was left by Edward Stephens in 1576. Only two families have owned Chavenage; the present owners (Lowsley-Williams) since 1891 and the Stephens family before them.
Inside Chavenage there are many interesting rooms, especially the 17th-century tapestries. The house and grounds have been used as a TV and film location on many occasions, including featuring as Trenwith in the hugely popular Poldark.

Because elderly and vulnerable family members still live on the premises, individual visits to Chavenage continue to be suspended. Only pre-booked group visits (not free for Historic Houses members) are available.

Groups can be booked on any day throughout the year, with the visit being tailor-made, starting at a mutally convenient time. The standard charge for visiting Chavenage is set at Adults at £12 (inc Vat) and children at £6 (inc Vat). With a the minimum group size being 21 persons or the financial equivalent – that is £250.00 (1.5 hours) for a tour, on a day and at a time that suits.
For the ‘Chavenage Experience’ we can offer lunch either before or after the tour, with family members attending in the private apartments. My sister the Prue Leith trained Joanna Gouriet oversees the in-house catering for private groups, (two course lunch and coffee accompanied by house wines) which is based on £70 per head for all those lunching. She would cover any special dietaries as long as prior warning is given. She can also lay on teas, which would be priced when she is aware of their requirements, ranging from the Full Cotswold Tea to just a cup of tea or coffee.
